Cat Handbag

This one-of-a-kind Cat Handbag was handcrafted by master leatherworker DeWayne Ross in Silver City, New Mexico. Cut from black Italian pebble-grain cowhide, it sits upright like a watchful cat, with hand-dyed yellow eyes, antique copper hardware and a roomy zippered interior.

Photos 1–4 show the actual bag for sale. There is only one, and it is in stock and ready to ship. The remaining photos show a past Cat Handbag (veg-tan leather, hand-dyed) that has already sold, as an example of custom work.

Materials: Black Italian pebble-grain cowhide, chrome-tanned, 3–4 oz (1.2–1.6 mm) thick, with a lasting pebble texture and limited stretch. Antique copper hardware and a heavy-duty zipper. As with all real leather, small natural marks are part of its character.

Size: 14.5" H x 13" L x 5" W, with a 35" adjustable strap.

Handcrafted: Every piece was cut by hand, the yellow eyes were dyed by hand, and the whole bag was stitched by hand. DeWayne never uses sewing machines or machine cutters.

Leather Care

Handmade leather lasts a lifetime with a little care. Every 3 to 6 months, wipe it with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality leather conditioner to keep it supple and help prevent drying and cracking. If it gets wet, blot it gently and let it air dry at room temperature, away from heaters, hair dryers and direct sun. Store it somewhere cool and dry with some airflow, never in a plastic bag or a damp space, which can cause mildew. Hats keep their shape best stored upside down on the crown or on a hat stand. Leather that has dried out or been neglected isn't covered under repairs.

Alterations and Repairs

Each handmade leather piece includes one free fitting adjustment if requested within 30 days of purchase. After that, alterations and repairs are quoted by the hour, and payment is due before work begins. The customer pays return shipping for all alterations, including the free one.

Alteration turnaround is 2 to 4 weeks from the day we receive the item, depending on our handcrafting schedule. Rush service isn't guaranteed.

Care: Wipe with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and dirt; avoid soap and harsh cleaners. Apply a leather conditioner made for finished leather every 6–12 months (every 3–6 months in dry climates) to keep it supple. Store away from prolonged direct sunlight and heat to protect the color. When storing, stuff the bag with paper so it keeps its shape. Blot spills right away and let it air-dry away from heat. Test any conditioner on a hidden spot first.
