Leather Plague Doctor Facemask

These leather plague doctor masks were handcrafted by master leatherworker DeWayne Ross in Silver City, New Mexico. Each has the long, curved beak and round lensed eye openings of the 17th-century plague doctors, and each is made as a statement piece for costume, cosplay, Halloween or display.

Only ONE of each color is available: one antique light tan, one black and one oxblood, all the same simple design. Photos 7–8 show the actual oxblood mask for sale, and photos 9–11 show the actual antique light tan mask for sale. Photos of the black mask are coming soon. Photos 1–6 show an ornate black mask with a gold Jerusalem Cross, a past piece that has sold; ornate designs like it are available as custom orders.

Materials: Vegetable-tanned, full-grain leather, hand-dyed in your choice of antique light tan, black or oxblood. As with all real leather, small natural marks are part of its character, and it develops a rich patina over time.

Size: Fits most adults, with adjustable straps. Beak length 24 cm (about 9 1/2") from tip to the face edge.

Leather Care

Handmade leather lasts a lifetime with a little care. Every 3 to 6 months, wipe it with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality leather conditioner to keep it supple and help prevent drying and cracking. If it gets wet, blot it gently and let it air dry at room temperature, away from heaters, hair dryers and direct sun. Store it somewhere cool and dry with some airflow, never in a plastic bag or a damp space, which can cause mildew. Hats keep their shape best stored upside down on the crown or on a hat stand. Leather that has dried out or been neglected isn't covered under repairs.

Alterations and Repairs

Each handmade leather piece includes one free fitting adjustment if requested within 30 days of purchase. After that, alterations and repairs are quoted by the hour, and payment is due before work begins. The customer pays return shipping for all alterations, including the free one.

Alteration turnaround is 2 to 4 weeks from the day we receive the item, depending on our handcrafting schedule. Rush service isn't guaranteed.

Care: Wipe with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust, and avoid soaking it or using harsh cleaners. Condition with a leather-specific conditioner every 6–12 months (more often in dry climates), testing on a hidden spot first. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat, and support the beak so it keeps its shape.

Policy: All sales are final. Only damaged or defective items are exceptions.
